Word Perfect
WordPerfect 4.1 - © 1985 Satellite Software International
Here is a version of WordPerfect released by the vendor's original name. This was the last full version of WordPerfect released under SSI's business name. It was designed to be run either from its floppy disks or from a hard drive. There is no install program for this version. To install the software to a HD you simply copy all the files from the floppies to a directory on your HD. This was my first version of WordPerfect I used. It originally sold for US$495.

As WP Corp. released WordPerfect 6.0b for DOS they also released one last non-WYSIWYG version of their flagship word processor. WP 5.1+ lets you convert and save documents in 4.2, 5.0, 5.1, and 6.0 DOS formats. It has all of the features of 5.1, including spreadsheet links and much more and the extra compatibility with 6.0. It originally sold for US$495.

Do not adjust your browser -- you are not seeing double. This is indeed a DOS version of WordPerfect released by Novell after acquiring it from WP Corp. Novell incorporated many of the new features of its Windows version into the DOS version, and made it the only DOS word processor with Windows-like right-click pop-up menus in both DOS text and graphics modes. Other new features include QuickCorrect, QuickFormat, Coaches (which can offer help or actually make selections for you), drop caps, document histories, make-it-fit, pull-down tables, document templates, and more. This is the last DOS version of WordPerfect. It originally sold for US$495.

WordPerfect Corp. ported their flagship word processor to Windows 3.0. Their first 16-bit graphical word processor was packed with features and very good in spite of luke warm reviews by the industry. It displays draft mode in the blue-gray colors of their DOS ver-sions and WYSIWYG page mode in Windows' system colors. What hurt WPW 5.1 was it came with a DOS install program and was released at the end of Windows 3.0's life cycle. It originally sold for $495.

MS Word

Microsoft Word had evolved exponentially since it's early DOS versions. Now it was the industry favorite, even over WordPerfect. In addition to the standard word processor fea-tures, Word also has templates, bookmarks, WordArt, AutoCorrect, grammar checker, AutoText, AutoFormat, styles, mail merge, envelope and label support, macros, tables, columns, spreadsheet integration, and much more. This was one of Microsoft's last 16-bit versions of Word.

This is Electric Desk reborn! Not to be left out of the WP/SS/DB/comm scene, Lotus also developed their own DOS software suite. With Electric Desk's interface for switching be-tween "services" (programs), pull-down (and up) menus, dictionary and thesaurus, and mouse support, Lotus Works provides an inexpensive way to work with word processor, spreadsheet, database, and communication applications. The spreadsheet is 1-2-3 compati-ble, the database is dBASE III + compatible, and the word processor saves documents in ASCII text format.

In the early days of PCs hard disks were very small -- a 10MB HD was considered large. Disk space was precious so programs were designed to be run from floppy disks. Multi-mate is one such program. With utilities, a spell checker, dictionary, and utilities, this menu-driven program can provide adequate word processing. There is no mouse support.

This word processor features a spell checker, thesaurus, address book, headers, footers, text justification, margin and page length settings, find and replace, text formatting, mark/paste text, delete word/line, draw lines, macros, built-in calculator, WYSIWYG print preview, file merge/delete/erase, mark/ paste text, automatic list formatting, envelope printing, support for major DOS word processors, Lotus 1-2-3, dBASE III, ASCII text, and Harvard Graphics. It also has on-line help. Later versions of this word processor would be known as PFS:Write.
This version was released on six 360K and three 720K floppies.
